Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile now available on Android and Maemo

Good news, Mozilla fans! You’ve finally got the opportunity to play around with the excellent Firefox browser on your smartphone, Mozilla has just announced that they are launching the Firefox 4 Beta For Mobile, and it is now available to download in ten different languages on both Android and Maemo devices.

What can you expect? For one, a new theme gives Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile a fresh look and includes new features supporting tabbed browsing and robust link sharing with friends and contacts. It’s also a sleek, minimal install that has been shrunk up to 60% for mobile devices.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile is also blisteringly fast: they say that on Android 2.2 FroYo, Firefox 4 for Mobile toasts the stock Android browser, running 25% faster on the SunSpider Javascript benchmark.

Of course, it’s a beta, so there’s still missing odds and ends. There’s no hardware acceleration yet, but Mozilla says it’s coming an dwill make scrolling and zooming even faster. Also missing? Sort of a biggy for a mobile browser: Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile doesn’t do HTML5 video. Sort of a big deal, all things considered, but Mozilla swears they are working on it.

If you’d like to try Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile on your Android or Maemo smartphone, you can grab it here.
